Mission Statement

Inspired by our rich historical roots, we bring the power of music to our community by featuring the region's finest professional musicians and offering a diverse repertoire that enriches our community's cultural landscape. We strive to embody the humble vision of our founders, remaining dedicated to providing artistic excellence and fostering a deep appreciation for classical music within Gettysburg and beyond.

History

The Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1998 by Carolyn and Norman Nunamaker. Their vision was made real after their retirement with the creation of a professional orchestra in Gettysburg. The ensemble has performed works ranging from all eras of music and has ranged in size to cover small Baroque works, to the large symphonies of Mahler. The Orchestra performs under the sponsorship of Music, Gettysburg! and all concerts are free of charge. Currently, the orchestra performs 3 times each season. These concerts include presenting 2 large concerts featuring the entire ensemble in September and May. The other concert features a small group of players presenting works from or related to the Baroque period.

The GCO has become an artistic gem of community talent, dedicated to celebrating and nurturing the musical life in Adams County. One of its main missions has been to use as much local talent as possible with connections to Gettysburg! This has included many of its members either living in or around Gettysburg.  As well, the group has featured soloists with long ties to its hometown who have gone on to play with groups like the New York Philharmonic, The Met Opera Orchestra and Atlanta Symphony, amongst others.

Beginning in September of 2023, the Orchestra made its first change in directorship following the retirement of Norman and Carolyn. Ryan Kozak and his wife, Kate Guy will now serve as Music Director and Executive Director, respectively.
